A few years back I was seeing a woman who recently separated and was in the process of moving to a new home for herself and her son. Although she is extremely capable herself, it is still a daunting task to take care of the requirements for a new home, work full-time plus overtime, and take care of a child on your own. She enlisted my help and I installed some toilets, sinks, painted, tore out an old kitchen, and stripped an old linoleum floor. She was very grateful and in her exhausted state exclaimed how she didn’t know how she could have done it without me. Well, truth be told, she would have anyway, but it is nice to have someone to take care of a whole bunch of stuff instead of having to run in a dozen different directions for help. Also, it’s great to have someone around when other trades drop by, so you can get a second opinion about what they say you require.
For instance, she got a rather attractive estimate for her paint job from another contractor, which I found to be insane both time and cost wise, not to mention quality if they had done it in the time promised. It did not turn out well.
When my sister bought her first home I was on the job again – great to have family offer work when you’re starting out. New powder room, front porch paint and new railings, new faucet, paint in two rooms, new closet construction and doors – just a whole bunch of stuff that needed doing. Again different disciplines all offered by one Handyman, and the same phrase “ I don’t know what I would have done….”
If you’re out on your own, or suddenly single again, I can say from experience that I know how you feel. If you’re not looking at a doing a full renovation on your place, but need someone to tackle that Honey Do list, I’m ready to help.
